Two second-half fumbles doom UWF in loss to EKU

Ty’Ray Davis looks downfield as the Argos battle Eastern Kentucky.

West Florida had a chance to earn a road win Saturday afternoon, but two second-half fumbles helped Eastern Kentucky rally for a 16-13 victory.

The Argos took a 13-10 lead early in the third quarter when Reid Grek connected on a 38-yard field goal. UWF had gone into halftime tied with the Colonels after Ty’Ray Davis threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Luc Carroll with 58 seconds left in the second quarter, followed by Grek’s 43-yard field goal as time expired.

EKU tied the game after recovering a UWF punt-return fumble in the third quarter. The turnover gave the Colonels possession at the Argos’ 27-yard line, and Devin Orr made a 36-yard field goal to even the score at 13.

The decisive turnover came early in the fourth quarter. Davis was sacked and fumbled, and EKU recovered at the UWF 32. The Colonels moved into field-goal range, where Orr connected from 33 yards with 9:01 remaining to give EKU the lead.

West Florida had opportunities to answer but couldn’t get back into scoring position. The Argos finished with 225 yards of total offense, including 88 rushing yards, and converted four of 14 third-down attempts. Davis completed 14 of 32 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown.

UWF’s defense kept the game close, limiting EKU to 261 total yards. After taking the lead, the Colonels controlled the ball for the final 4:53 to secure the win. The loss moved the Argos to 4-3 overall and 1-3 in United Athletic Conference play.
