UWF must improve pass protection during open week

Ty’Ray Davis sets up behind the UWF offensive line during the Argos’ 2026 season. UWF will use its open week to work on pass protection ahead of its matchup with North Alabama.

UWF has an important stretch of preparation ahead after a narrow 16-13 loss to Eastern Kentucky. The Argonauts have an open week before returning to action Nov. 7 at North Alabama, giving them time to address an issue that hurt them in Richmond: pass protection.

The clearest example came in the fourth quarter. Ty’Ray Davis was sacked and fumbled, and Eastern Kentucky recovered at the UWF 32-yard line. The Colonels turned that possession into the go-ahead field goal with 9:01 remaining.

UWF finished with 137 passing yards on 14-of-32 completions and 225 yards of total offense. The Argos also lost two second-half fumbles, allowing Eastern Kentucky to convert those turnovers into the points that decided the game.

During the open week, the offensive line and the rest of the protection unit can work on communication, identifying pressure and keeping the pocket secure. Davis also needs clean opportunities to make reads and deliver the ball without pressure disrupting the play.

The Argos have already shown they can produce through the air. Against EKU, Davis connected with Tyshon Mansell six times for 80 yards. Better protection could help UWF build on that connection and create more consistent offense.

UWF has a chance to turn a close loss into a useful reset. A stronger performance up front against North Alabama would give the Argos a better chance to protect the football, sustain drives and finish the opportunities that were missing against the Colonels.
