The Gulf Shores standout plans to visit Lincoln after the Cornhuskers praised his motor and sideline-to-sideline pursuit.
Gabriel Oquendo-Ervin was surprised when Nebraska offered him, but the Cornhuskers made it clear what caught their attention.
“I was surprised when Coach Keith Williams offered me,” Oquendo-Ervin said. “They told me they loved my hustle and how I ran sideline to sideline.”
The 6-foot-2, 265-pound defensive lineman from Gulf Shores already holds offers from Tennessee, Texas Tech, Troy and Appalachian State.
Oquendo-Ervin is a big interior defender who moves really well for his size. He plays with a good motor, chases the ball across the field and does more than simply take up space in the middle.
He showed off that athleticism earlier this season when he returned an interception 79 yards for a touchdown.
The Nebraska offer could also expand his recruitment outside the South.
“This changes my recruitment a lot because Nebraska is far from home,” Oquendo-Ervin said. “It shows other schools that I’m willing to play anywhere that gives me an opportunity.”
Nebraska has already expanded the way Oquendo-Ervin views his recruitment. Now he wants to see Lincoln for himself.
“I’m definitely planning to visit,” he said. “I want to learn more about the program and the coaching staff.”
