UWF held West Alabama to a program-record 29 yards of total offense Saturday, and defensive end Byron Puryear led the way with seven tackles, five tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in the Argos’ 37-3 win.
The Tigers finished with minus-16 rushing yards and managed only six first downs. They had six drives that lost yardage and went three-and-out nine times.
Puryear’s pressure helped keep West Alabama from building any rhythm. Across the defense, UWF controlled the line of scrimmage and forced the Tigers into repeated setbacks. The Argos’ offense took advantage, piling up 528 yards, including 329 on the ground, as UWF scored 30 unanswered points.
The performance moves UWF to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in United Athletic Conference play. Next is a road matchup with Eastern Kentucky, which is 2-5 and coming off a 49-20 loss to Tennessee Tech. The Colonels also own a 30-20 conference win over West Georgia, a reminder that UWF will need to bring the same focus it showed against West Alabama.
The Argos visit Roy Kidd Stadium in Richmond on Saturday, Oct. 24. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Central.
UWF set a program defensive record at home. Now the Argos will try to carry that performance into a conference road test.
