UWF wanted FCS respect — ACU just gave the Argos a reality check

Abilene Christian breaks into the open field against UWF during Saturday night’s 35–7 loss. The Argos fell to 3–2 in their first FCS season and now turn their attention to bouncing back at home.

UWF had spent the first month proving it belonged.

Then Abilene Christian handed the Argos their first real beating of the FCS era.

No. 17 UWF never really got comfortable in the 35–7 loss. ACU grabbed control, kept the Argos from finding any rhythm and made UWF pay when things started going wrong.

That doesn’t erase what UWF has already done.

The Argos beat No. 16 Southern Illinois, went on the road and took care of No. 24 Central Arkansas and came into Saturday at 3–1. They’ve already shown they can compete.

But this is also part of the jump to FCS. Good teams are going to expose mistakes, especially on the road in conference play.

ACU did exactly that.

And Dillon Williams, our player to watch coming in, backed it up with a career-high 17 tackles.

One bad night isn’t going to define UWF’s season. What happens next will tell us a little more.

The Argos return home next Saturday against Northeastern State, a team they beat 31–24 on the road last season.

Now Northeastern State comes to Pensacola, and we’ll find out pretty quickly what UWF learned from this one.
