UWF survived without Ty’Ray Davis — now QB1 is back

Ty’Ray Davis is expected back under center as No. 17 UWF hits the road for a UAC matchup against Abilene Christian.

UWF found a way to win last week without Ty’Ray Davis.

Now the Argos are expecting QB1 back.

Davis is expected to return to the starting lineup Saturday when No. 17 UWF goes on the road to face Abilene Christian.

That’s a big deal for this offense.

UWF got through last week’s 20-17 win over SEMO with Davis playing just one snap. Donovan Leary stepped in for his first college start, and the Argos leaned on a defense that forced six turnovers.

They got the win. That was the important part.

But having Davis back changes what UWF can do offensively.

He can beat you with his arm, but his legs are what really make things difficult. Davis can turn a broken play into a first down, keep the ball in the run game or make a defense pay when nobody accounts for the quarterback.

UWF coach Kaleb Nobles expects his quarterback room to be in much better shape this week.

“We anticipate both guys being healthy and available,” Nobles said.

That’s good timing because ACU isn’t your normal 1-4 team.

The Wildcats are the two-time defending UAC champions and haven’t lost a conference game at home since 2023. They have also played a tough schedule, so Nobles isn’t getting caught up in their record.

“I watched film. They’re a great team,” Nobles said.

UWF has already shown it can win in different ways this season.

The Argos are 3-1 with two road wins, and last week they showed they can grind one out even when the offense isn’t at full strength.

Now they get another road test.

Only this time, Ty’Ray Davis should be back behind center.

UWF proved it could survive without QB1.

Now let’s see what the Argos look like with him back.
