Kyle Hunnicutt
West Florida will chase the first victory of its Division I era tonight, with junior forward Kyle Hunnicutt returning to face his former South Florida program.
The Pensacola native transferred from South Florida to UWF and will now return to Corbett Stadium as an opponent. His familiarity with the Bulls adds another storyline to the first meeting between the two programs.
The Argonauts enter the matchup 0-1 after opening their Division I era with a 3-2 loss to UTRGV on Thursday in Pensacola. UWF held two separate leads behind goals from freshman Tobias Gjesdahl and senior Adrian Rodriguez.
Nikolas Rodriguez Alzate assisted Gjesdahl’s opening goal in the 11th minute, while Andrey Gentil set up Rodriguez’s goal late in the first half. UWF carried a 2-1 lead into halftime before UTRGV scored twice after the break.
The performance showed that the Argonauts can create quality scoring opportunities against Division I competition. Maintaining their defensive structure after halftime will be one of the biggest areas to watch tonight.
South Florida is also searching for its first victory after suffering a 2-1 loss to Winthrop in its opener. Jakob Auby scored the Bulls’ lone goal.
The Bulls were picked to finish third in the American Conference preseason coaches poll, with Pedro Faife earning preseason all-conference recognition. South Florida is led by George Kiefer, who returned for his second tenure after previously guiding the program to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances.
Tonight also begins a three-match road stretch for the Argonauts. UWF will visit USC Upstate on Aug. 27 before traveling to Georgia State on Aug. 30.
Tonight gives UWF another chance to prove its attacking success in the opener can travel—and an opportunity to earn the first Division I win of its new era.
