UWF has announced its reopening plans following Hurricane Isaias. Now, the attention turns to the football program and whether Saturday’s scheduled matchup against West Alabama will be cleared to move forward.
After losing last weekend’s game to the storm, the Argonauts are hoping to avoid another interruption and finally return to competition.
Saturday’s Game Still in Question
UWF is scheduled to host West Alabama at 4 p.m. Saturday at PenAir Field. However, final clearance has not been confirmed as university officials continue evaluating campus conditions.
President Manny Diaz Jr. previously expressed hope that the game could be played if conditions allowed.
“So if we can do it safely, we would like to do that,” Diaz said.
The Argonauts already had their October 10 matchup against Northeastern State canceled because of the hurricane. Another cancellation would extend their time away from competition and make it more difficult to regain their rhythm.
Campus Recovery Moving Forward
Meanwhile, faculty and staff are scheduled to return Friday, October 16, with classes expected to resume Monday, October 19.
Crews have continued clearing debris and restoring campus access, providing encouraging signs that the university is moving closer to normal operations.
Still, reopening campus and clearing a football game are two separate decisions.
For the Argonauts, Saturday represents more than another game. It’s an opportunity to put the disruption behind them and get their season moving again.
