PENSACOLA, Fla. — UWF is still recovering from Hurricane Isaias, and now the question is whether the Argonauts will be able to host West Alabama on Saturday.
The university has extended its campus closure through Wednesday, October 14, leaving limited time to complete safety inspections and restore normal operations before Saturday’s scheduled 4 p.m. Homecoming kickoff at PenAir Field.
For now, the game remains on the schedule, but there are still some important questions to answer.
Saturday’s Game Still in Question
There is some encouraging news coming out of Pensacola.
PenAir Field reportedly avoided significant damage during the hurricane. The playing surface remains in good condition, although torn scoreboard signage and a damaged play clock were among the issues identified.
However, stadium seating still needs to pass safety inspections before UWF can welcome fans back.
That’s one of the biggest factors in determining whether Saturday’s game can move forward as planned.
UWF officials continue evaluating campus conditions, with restoring power, clearing debris and making facilities safe remaining the immediate priorities.
What the Closure Means for UWF
For the Argonauts, the timing couldn’t be much tougher.
UWF already had its October 10 game against Northeastern State disrupted by the hurricane. Now another scheduled game faces uncertainty as the program works through an unusual week.
And it’s not just about Saturday’s kickoff.
The extended closure could affect practice schedules, access to facilities and the team’s normal preparation for West Alabama.
Meanwhile, the coaching staff still has to get its players ready without knowing exactly how the rest of the week will unfold.
Another cancellation would also mean more time away from competition for a program trying to establish consistency during its first FCS season.
What Happens Next?
The next few days will be important for UWF.
University officials must determine when campus operations can safely resume and whether PenAir Field is ready to host a football game.
Homecoming activities could also be affected, adding another layer of uncertainty to an already difficult week.
For now, Saturday’s matchup against West Alabama remains on the schedule.
But until UWF completes its inspections and confirms that campus facilities are ready, the Argonauts’ Homecoming plans remain uncertain.
The bottom line: UWF wants to get back on the field, but campus safety comes first. The next university update could provide a much clearer picture of whether Saturday’s game will be played as scheduled.
