UWF’s Saturday game canceled as Hurricane Isaias approaches

PENSACOLA, Fla. — West Florida won’t be playing football this Saturday after all.

UWF announced Wednesday that its October 10 home game against Northeastern State has been canceled because of Tropical Storm Isaias, which is expected to strengthen into a hurricane before reaching the northern Gulf Coast.

The Argos were scheduled to host the RiverHawks at PenAir Field, but university officials decided the safest move was to cancel the game as the storm approaches Pensacola.

The two schools also confirmed that the game will not be made up this season.

For UWF, the cancellation comes at a time when the Argos were looking to bounce back.

West Florida is 3-2 after last Saturday’s 35-7 loss at Abilene Christian. The Argos struggled to get much going offensively in that game, and Saturday’s matchup would have given them an opportunity to respond in front of their home crowd.

Instead, UWF will have an unexpected weekend off before returning to its schedule.

The university has also announced campus closures and changes to several other athletic events as the Pensacola area prepares for potentially dangerous weather.

For now, the focus shifts away from football and toward safety. The Argos will have additional time to regroup, get healthy and prepare for the next stretch of their first FCS season.
